Chaitanya S. Agarwal Groundwater Scientist, Hydrogeologist, Author, and Advocate of Geospatial Technologies in Water Resources Management Chaitanya S. Agarwal is a distinguished hydrogeologist and groundwater scientist whose professional career has been dedicated to the scientific assessment, development, conservation, and management of groundwater resources in India. Having served for several decades in the Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department (UPGWD), he belongs to the generation of scientists who helped modernise groundwater investigations by integrating traditional hydrogeological methods with emerging technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, and digital spatial analysis. His career spans the evolution of groundwater science from conventional field-based surveys to advanced geospatial approaches for resource management. After completing his 37 years of active service he retired in 2009. He successfully transitioned into scientific writing, education, and public outreach, authoring numerous books on groundwater, Remote sensing, environment, travel, urbanisation, and science communication. Early Education and Scientific Foundation Agarwal pursued higher education in Earth Sciences and subsequently specialised in Remote Sensing, acquiring expertise that would later define much of his professional work. His academic training equipped him with a multidisciplinary understanding of geology, hydrology, geomorphology, cartography, and environmental management. At a time when satellite technology was only beginning to find applications in resource management, he recognised the potential of geospatial tools for groundwater exploration and planning. After retirement he was associated with consultancy work for Handpumps installation in parts of Uttarakhand and wrote number of books on various social issues which are available on various E-platforms.
